Rate your second essay from 1-6 (6 is best)
Michael Gary Scott said, "Sometimes I'll start a sentence, and I don't even know where it's going. I just hope I find it along the way. Like an improv conversation. An improversation."What was some of your most important learning this year?I think that learning how to write the Rhetorical Analysis was extremely beneficial for my writing. It taught me that there are more than one way to write a thesis and how to recognize patterns within any given piece. When I finally figured out what I needed to do to earn the sophistication point for the Rhetorical Analysis, it was really rewarding. This and extra practice with writing an argumentative essay have improved my writing tremendously. I also feel that reading some of the classics like 1984 and Their Eyes Were Watching God were beneficial for my learning. These works are heavily discussed and referenced, and now I can understand what is going on and hold my own if I ever had to talk about them. What were some of your favorite experiences and learning this year?I loved reading Educated. I found the plot very interesting and the entire situation surrounding Tara’s life is fascinating. It is hard for me to understand how someone can live like that, and it gave me perspective. The discussion questions for that book were thoughtful and made me consider multiple points of view. Especially the discussion regarding the facebook post. I found that very interesting. This was also the first time in a long time I have really enjoyed reading a book that was assigned for school. I am usually unmotivated to read them and don’t find them engaging at all. However, with Educated, I read ahead on several occasions. Their Eyes Were Watching God was another book that I enjoyed, and I liked reading about Janie growing up and finding herself. The satirical article and political cartoon analysis assignment was also enjoyable for me to write. I chose a topic that interested me personally and I think that this was reflected in my writing. How might you be able to apply what you learned this year in the future? The writing skills I learned this year will stay with me for years to come. I feel I am now more skilled at writing a thesis and making connections between rhetorical strategies and the overall purpose of a piece. It is interesting to see how much rhetorical choices actually affect the purpose. As aforementioned, my new knowledge of the classic novels I read will benefit me for later classes and discussion. Learning about other cultures during our second term gave me perspective and I think I will be able to apply that later in life and become more mindful. What is something you accomplished this year that you are proud of?Finally achieving a 6 on my rhetorical analysis practice essays was very rewarding for me. During in class essays, I never scored over a 5, but more often a 4. I didn’t know what I was doing differently when compared to my argumentative essay. However, something in the videos we watched for assignments must have clicked. I am happy with my writing and proud of it. What was the most challenging part of this year for you?It was challenging for me to complete reading on time during the school year when we were actually in school. I have so many extracurriculars and a job so it was often hard to keep up. Other than that, I normally had a good time in class. I found most of the assignments engaging and insightful. How did you grow as a reader, writer, and critical thinker this year?I grew as a reader because I found several books that I actually enjoyed. When I was younger, I loved reading and I read several books a week. In middle school and early high school, I had a string of several books that I ended up hating and it instilled a hatred for reading in me. I don’t do it often anymore. Finding a book that I actually liked was refreshing. As a writer, I have previously mentioned that my writing skills have improved. I feel like I am more coherent and pay more attention to the details. I think my greatest improvement as a critical thinker came from my rhetorical analysis. Prior to this year, I had little to no knowledge of rhetorical strategies, let alone how to write about them. I think that knowing about them now makes me a better writer and facilitates my ability to draw connections. What advice would you give to next years students?Be able to take criticism and grow from it - it isn’t personal. It will help you become a better reader, writer, and critical thinker. Especially criticism from the AP grader. She knows how to help you score better. Don’t turn in work late. It is better to just get it done with and chances are Mrs. Mckay won’t take it anyway. :)
